Mimi Shapiro Altered Books-The Book as an Art Object An altered book involves taking an existing book and changing it in some way. The book is a personal statement, and it’s compelling to see how each one evolves. In this altered book demonstration, participants will get to see a variety of books and begin to think about how one goes about making their own book as object. Then participants will learn some ways to mix trinkets, treasures, words and images into a powerfully evocative work of art.
Moira McCauley and Steve Cole (I) Love Letters Steve Cole and Moira McCauley discuss their type catalog-cum-love letter book, (I) Love Letters. They will show slides of the book and the printing process and discuss the experimental methods they used for graphic effects.
Paul Johnson The Book as Architecture Paul Johnson specializes in making three-dimensional books inspired by architecture in which there are no folds and therefore no paper ‘fatigue.’ All sections are joined using a range of paper hinges, locks, and dovetail joints. One advantage of this method is that sections can be redesigned as the model develops – you simply take out one section and replace it with another. Paul will demonstrate these techniques and you will be able to handle his pop-up books in this genre.
